Dubai Marks 2014 with World Record Breaking Fireworks Display

On new Year’s Eve 2014, Dubai broke the world record for the largest fireworks display ever! Over 500,000 fireworks were used in the six minute show which covered a distance of 61.6 miles (or over 94 km) and included the city's seafront as well as Dubai's most famous landmarks like the Palm Jumeirah, World Islands, the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab.

It took workers 10 months of planning to pull off the incredible feat with 100 computers synchronizing the pyrotechnics with a musical soundtrack. To make sure that the fireworks' timing were accurate down to the millisecond, leading up to the event, more than 200 expert technicians worked an astounding 5,000 hours to entertain the reported 1.7 million people who attended the event.

Of course, everyone knows that Dubai does things in grand style. Organizers "just" had to beat the standing 2012 world record, the display to mark Kuwait's golden jubilee anniversary where 77,282 fireworks were launched. Dubai broke that record within their first minute.

UAE Journalist wins Volvo Ocean Race Reporter Slot

UAE based journalist, Tom Bushell, has been selected by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (ADOR) as the team’s On-board Reporter for the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race – The epic, round-the-world yacht race, which begins in Alicante, Spain in October 2014.

The 31-year-old Englishman, from North Shields, Tyne & Wear, claimed the highly sought-after slot in the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) after coming through a punishing five month selection process.

Often described as both the world’s best and the worst media job, the On-board Reporter is responsible for capturing the compelling stories for each yacht during the long months at sea, which make up the world’s longest professional sporting event. On-board Reporters must balance the need to contribute to the team dynamic, endure the often overwhelming battle against the world’s fiercest oceans and take on the responsibility of being the world’s eyes and ears On-board the Volvo Ocean 65 yacht as it battles through the 39,379 nautical miles route.

Bushell’s extensive journalism career, past sailing experience convinced Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing of his ability to capture and document the incredible feats of human achievement that take place under extreme conditions On-board a Volvo Ocean 65.

The hive of Volvo Ocean Race activity and excitement is once again expected to bring thousands of overseas visitors into Abu Dhabi over Christmas and New Year 2014/2015.

The best destination in the world

Dubai has been voted the best destination in the world by tour operators. The city also won 'Best Destination' in the Middle East, 'Best International Destination' and 'Best Destination for Conferences' in a survey of 167,000 tour operators and travel agents in 200 countries. The survey’s findings put the city ahead of other long-established destinations, such as London, Paris, New York and Los Angeles. The awards were received at a ceremony at the 39th International Tourism Exchange in Berlin.

Mohammed Khamis bin Hareb, director of operations and marketing at the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), put the city’s success down to an aggressive campaign promoting Dubai as a year-round holiday and business destination. Dubai attracted 5.42 million visitors in 2004, according to DTCM figures. In 2003 the emirate pulled in 4.9 million. Officials hope to attract more than ten million visitors per year within the next ten years.
